Savings Goal Calculator

"How long until I hit my savings goal" and "how much do I need to save monthly to hit it by a certain date" are two different questions with two different formulas, and interest earned along the way changes both answers more than most people expect over a multi-year goal. This tool solves either direction and factors in a given interest/return rate rather than assuming your money just sits still.

How to use this savings calculator

  1. Choose your mode: "How long to reach goal?" or "How much per month?"
  2. Enter your target amount and current savings.
  3. Set your monthly contribution (or target timeline in reverse mode) and expected interest rate.
  4. Review the results, growth chart, and year-by-year breakdown.

Why interest matters more the longer your timeline is

Over a 1-year goal, interest barely moves the number. You're mostly just saving the raw amount. Over a 10-year goal at even a modest 4% return, a meaningful chunk of your final total comes from growth, not contributions. This is why the calculator asks for an expected rate of return rather than assuming zero: treating a long-term savings goal like cash sitting in a drawer overstates how much you actually need to contribute yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What interest rate should I use if I'm not sure?

For cash sitting in a high-yield savings account, use whatever rate that account currently advertises; for money invested in a diversified portfolio, a conservative long-term estimate is often used for planning, though actual returns vary year to year and aren't guaranteed.

Does it assume I add money monthly, or just a lump sum?

It supports both a starting lump sum and ongoing monthly contributions. Enter either or both depending on your actual plan.

What's the difference between this and the Compound Interest Calculator?

This tool solves for time-to-goal or required monthly contribution given a target; the Compound Interest Calculator projects forward from a contribution plan to show what you'll end up with. Same math, different question being answered.
