How to use the Typing Speed Test

1. Select your preferred test duration: 15 seconds for a quick check, 30 seconds for a standard test, or 60 seconds for a thorough assessment.
2. Click Start Test to begin. A passage of real sentences will appear on screen.
3. Type the passage as quickly and accurately as you can. Correct characters turn green and errors turn red.
4. When the timer runs out, review your results: net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, and a speed chart showing your performance over time.
5. Click Try Again to retake the test and try to beat your personal best.

What's actually a good WPM

Average typing speed across the general population sits around 38–40 WPM. Professional typists and heavy daily typists (writers, transcriptionists, programmers) commonly land in the 65–75 WPM range, and competitive typists can exceed 120 WPM. If your number surprises you either way, run it two or three times. The first attempt on any typing test tends to undercount because you're still calibrating to the specific text and keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

Does a typo count against me even if I fix it?

Depends on the difficulty mode. Stricter modes penalize any keystroke error even if corrected, which better reflects real accuracy under pressure; the easier modes only score the final submitted text.

Why does my score vary a lot between attempts?

Text difficulty (common words vs. uncommon vocabulary, punctuation-heavy passages) changes the result significantly. Compare attempts at the same difficulty level, not across different ones.

Does keyboard type affect the result?

Yes, meaningfully. Mechanical keyboards, laptop keyboards, and on-screen mobile keyboards all produce different average speeds for the same person, so don't compare a phone score to a desktop one.
