Word & Character Counter
Paste or type your text to get an instant count of words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs. Includes estimated reading and speaking times.
How it works
Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace boundaries, which matches how most word processors count. Characters are tallied both with and without spaces so you can meet limits that count either way — useful for tweets, meta descriptions, or SMS messages.
Sentences are detected by looking for terminal punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points) followed by a space or end of text. Paragraphs are counted as blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines.
Reading time is estimated at roughly 238 words per minute (the average adult silent reading speed), while speaking time uses about 150 words per minute. These estimates help you gauge how long a blog post, presentation, or script will take to consume.
