You’ve probably punched your stats into a calorie calculator before. Maybe you tried two different ones and got two different numbers. One says you burn 2,400 calories a day. Another says 2,150. A third says 2,600. None of them are “wrong.” They’re using different formulas and assumptions. Understanding what’s under the hood helps you interpret the results instead of being confused by them.
BMR vs. TDEE: Two Different Numbers
These two terms get mixed up constantly, so let’s be precise.
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest: lying still, awake, in a temperature-neutral environment, having fasted for 12 hours. It’s the energy cost of simply existing: keeping your heart beating, your lungs breathing, your brain functioning, your cells dividing. For most people, BMR accounts for 60-75% of total daily calorie expenditure.
TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is everything. It includes your BMR plus the energy you spend on physical activity, digestion (called the thermic effect of food, or TEF), and non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT: fidgeting, walking to the kitchen, standing up from your desk). TDEE is the number that matters for weight management.
The relationship is straightforward: TDEE = BMR x Activity Multiplier. That multiplier is where most of the disagreement between calculators comes from. But first, let’s look at the BMR formulas themselves.
The Major BMR Formulas
Harris-Benedict (Original, 1919)
This is the oldest widely-used formula, developed by James Arthur Harris and Francis Gano Benedict from calorimetry measurements of 239 subjects.
For men: BMR = 66.5 + (13.75 x weight in kg) + (5.003 x height in cm) - (6.755 x age)
For women: BMR = 655.1 + (9.563 x weight in kg) + (1.850 x height in cm) - (4.676 x age)
A revised version was published by Roza and Shizgal in 1984 with slightly adjusted coefficients, and many calculators use the revised version without labeling it as such.
Mifflin-St Jeor (1990)
Developed from a study of 498 subjects, this formula is generally considered more accurate for modern populations than Harris-Benedict, and is recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for estimating BMR in healthy individuals.
For men: BMR = (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) + 5
For women: BMR = (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) - 161
Katch-McArdle (1996)
This formula takes a different approach. Instead of using height, weight, age, and sex, it uses lean body mass (total weight minus body fat):
BMR = 370 + (21.6 x lean body mass in kg)
If you know your body fat percentage, this is often the most accurate option because it accounts for body composition directly. Two people who weigh 80 kg can have very different BMRs if one is 15% body fat and the other is 30%, because the leaner person has more metabolically active tissue.
A Worked Example
Let’s calculate BMR for a 30-year-old male, 178 cm (about 5’10“), 80 kg (about 176 lbs).
Harris-Benedict (original): 66.5 + (13.75 x 80) + (5.003 x 178) - (6.755 x 30) = 66.5 + 1100 + 890.5 - 202.65 = 1,854 calories/day
Mifflin-St Jeor: (10 x 80) + (6.25 x 178) - (5 x 30) + 5 = 800 + 1112.5 - 150 + 5 = 1,768 calories/day
That’s an 86-calorie difference between the two formulas for the same person, about 5%. Not huge, but it’s there. If this person has 20% body fat (64 kg lean mass), Katch-McArdle gives:
370 + (21.6 x 64) = 1,752 calories/day
Three formulas, three answers: 1,854, 1,768, and 1,752. All are estimates. Your actual BMR could be measured precisely with indirect calorimetry (breathing into a device that measures oxygen consumption and CO2 production), but that’s not exactly accessible outside research labs or clinical settings.
Activity Multipliers: Where the Real Variance Lives
Here’s where calorie calculators diverge the most. The standard approach is to multiply BMR by an activity factor. The most commonly used scale comes from research in the mid-20th century:

Using our Mifflin-St Jeor BMR of 1,768 for the example above:
- Sedentary: 1,768 x 1.2 = 2,122
- Lightly active: 1,768 x 1.375 = 2,431
- Moderately active: 1,768 x 1.55 = 2,740
The difference between “sedentary” and “lightly active” is over 300 calories. The problem: which one are you?
Why Self-Assessment Fails
Most people are terrible at categorizing their own activity level. The definitions are vague. What counts as “moderate exercise”? If you do three 30-minute runs per week, are you “lightly active” or “moderately active”? What if you have a desk job but walk 8,000 steps a day? What if you do intense weightlifting four times a week but sit at a computer for the other 160 hours?
Different calculators define these levels differently. Some count daily walking. Some only count deliberate exercise. Some ask about your job. Some factor in commute type. This is why Calculator A says 2,400 and Calculator B says 2,150: they might be using the same BMR formula but categorizing your activity level one step apart.
The multiplier gap between each level is large: 0.175. Applied to a BMR of 1,768, that’s roughly 310 calories per level. Picking the wrong activity level matters more than which BMR formula the calculator uses.
NEAT: The Hidden Variable
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis, the calories you burn from all movement that isn’t deliberate exercise, can vary enormously between individuals. Research by Dr. James Levine at the Mayo Clinic found that NEAT can differ by up to 2,000 calories per day between people of similar size. Some people fidget, pace, gesture while talking, and take the stairs without thinking about it. Others sit still.
NEAT is nearly impossible to estimate from a questionnaire, and the standard activity multipliers don’t capture it well. This is another reason two people with identical stats can get the same calculator output but have meaningfully different actual TDEEs.
How to Actually Use These Estimates
Given all these sources of error, you might wonder if TDEE calculations are even useful. They are, but as a starting point, not an answer.
Step 1: Get Your Estimate
Use a calculator (Mifflin-St Jeor is a solid default). Be honest but conservative with your activity level. If you’re between two levels, pick the lower one. Overestimating activity is by far the more common error.
Step 2: Track and Adjust
Eat at your estimated TDEE for two to three weeks while tracking your food intake accurately (weigh or measure portions, count cooking oils and condiments, log drinks). Monitor your weight under consistent conditions (same time of day, same state of dress). Weight fluctuates daily due to water retention, so look at the weekly trend, not day-to-day numbers.
If your weight is stable, your estimate was close. If you’re gaining about 0.25 kg (0.5 lb) per week, you’re eating roughly 250-300 calories above your true TDEE. If you’re losing at that rate, you’re eating below it. Adjust accordingly.
Step 3: Recalculate Periodically
Your TDEE changes as your weight changes, as you age, as your activity patterns shift, and as your body composition changes. A calculation you did six months and 10 kg ago isn’t accurate anymore. Recalculate every few months or whenever your circumstances change significantly.
Don’t Chase False Precision
A TDEE estimate of 2,347 calories is not meaningfully different from 2,350 or 2,300. The inputs to the formula are approximate (your listed weight might be off by a kg, the activity multiplier is inherently fuzzy), and the formula itself is a population-level regression, not a personalized measurement. Thinking in ranges (“my TDEE is probably between 2,200 and 2,500”) is more honest and more useful than fixating on a single number.
The value of these calculators isn’t that they give you your exact number. It’s that they give you a reasonable neighborhood to start from, saving you months of blind trial and error.
